Paper
Plain paper is a ubiquitous cellulose-based material that presents unique mechanical and chemical risks in healthcare settings. Biomechanically, its sharp edges inflict superficial, highly painful lacerations known as paper cuts. These microscopic wounds stimulate high concentrations of nociceptors in the fingertips, often remaining open to air and increasing localized nerve irritation. Chemically, standard plain paper contains bleaching agents and fillers like calcium carbonate, which can cause contact dermatitis in sensitive individuals. Furthermore, unprocessed plain paper is highly porous, making it an opportunistic vector for cross-contamination and pathogen transmission, rendering it entirely unsuitable for sterile medical packaging or surgical fields.
